On first being introduced to this project, I have to be honest, I am pretty clueless. I have always been interested in the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s and when I was in college and focusing on fashion and style, this is an area I do remember touching on. However, my actual factual knowledge of that time isn't extensive, especially in terms of what things were like in Berlin.
I am currently in the process of reading Goodbye to Berlin and already, I can feel a massive contrast in the way people threw away inhibition and were so care free at such a stressful and problematic time. I haven't seen Cabaret before, nor have I heard of Weimar Berlin, so already this project is beginning with huge amounts of curiosity and I look forward to embarking into new learning territory.
The dusty and seedy vibes I have picked up on from the few clips I have watched, are totally up my street. There is a theatrical buzz about this story that leaves you wanting to know and see more. I am particularly looking forward to creating something broken and fragile, to represent the economic state at that time, but something pleasing and promiscuous to represent the not so secret society of that time also.
My biggest fear I have come to learn from last year, is not executing and doing my ideas justice. I look back upon our projects from first year, and feel that somewhere along the long between idea, conception and final outcome, something went wrong. Over the summer, I have reflected on myself and the type of artist I am and recognise the changes that need to be made to completely fulfil what is expected of me, especially in terms of my final outcomes.
